Dead Men's Spex - Proper Retro Styling

Whenever I hunt for a nice pair of retro, geeky glasses online, all I've ever found are watered-down versions of the traditional designs.
Naturally most people don't want to look like their grandma, so these mainstream-vintagesque goggles are the norm.

I saw an ad for www.deadmensspex.com in a tattoo flash type magazine & thought, 'at last!'.
The website is obviously run by an expert in the design of the previous century. The frames are sorted into their respective eras, and are true to the time periods. Now here is the best bit, Dead Men's Spex can fit your chosen pair with your own lens prescription. So you can now have your day-to-day glasses match your vintage clothing.
They also can fit tinted lenses, or prescription sunglasses.

I ordered myself a lovely little cat's eye librarian pair, which arrived in an equally cute box.

Creepy Child Picture

My ugly art wall was one of my first avenues into the huge, kitsch mess my house is in these days.

Consequently I have almost a dozen of these gypsy children framed around the house. It always annoyed me if I saw one in a charity shop lately, as I knew I didn't have any more room to take it home.

Today I had to break my 'no more haunting, creeptastic kid paintings' rule for this little madam.

Ownership was mandatory partially due to the pup being the breed we had growing up, but also the fact it was only £2.
You see, the kitschy antiques at St.George's Market, Belfast, whilst genuine and fantastic, also come with a high price tag. So getting something for two quid there, couldn't be missed out on!

I hope she will feel at home amongst my Dallas Simpson & Lou Shabner infant terrors.

Modernist Art Deco House...for a Tortoise

We have the most kitsch pet I could think of, a tortoise. Now it's getting colder I worry about him getting cold outside.
He has his UV lamp & heat lamp in the morning and evening inside, but to keep him well he has to have time out in his garden run too.

I was resigning myself to a traditional hutch when I found this shelter design on www.cosycages.com
They make solid, plastic shelters for dogs, cats, rabbits and tortoises, and the design immediately appealed to me.

I'm going to fill it with hay and I think I'll have a very cosy tortoise who still has access to dandering round the grass this autumn.

Free Cupcakes for Northern Irish Folks!

I recently entered a competition on Northern Irish site www.chilliandchocolate.com to invent your dream cupcake.

I can't bake very successfully, so the prize of a box of my dream cupcake made up was a good'un!

I'm very envious of my peers who are part of the new wave of crafters and bakers, I lack the skill, but have lots of good ideas!

My invented cupcake is now in the final 4 which will be made up for tasting and public vote at St. George's Market Belfast, Sunday 12.30pm.
So if you fancy some free buns, you know where to be tomorrow.

Here's my entry which will be available to test & vote on.

Eastern Promise A straightforward milk chocolate cake mix, but with a chunk of Rose Turkish delight enclosed inside. Topped with deep pink, Turkish delight coloured icing, and sprinkled with tiny dark chocolate stars.
