A Visit To The New Ballyhackamore Pizza Express :Wait Until You See Their Clever, Subtle, C. S. Lewis Interior Theme!

image.jpg

Pizza Express opened two new NI branches today, one in the city centre at St. Anne's, the cathedral quarter, and one in Ballyhackamore. The location is on the right driving into the city, at the little row of shops set back from the road.

image.jpg

We live in Bangor & previously would drive through Belfast & up to the Lisburn Road branch, why? The free parking! So now there's a closer restaurant on this side of the city, with no need to park in Belfast city centre & have to pay.

The first impression walking in to the Ballyhackamore Pizza Express is just 'wow'. The decorative wooden ceilings, panelled walls, booths & book features coupled with the traditional clean & open spacious Pizza Express aesthetic you find in any of their restaurants just works.

It wasn't until I overheard the manager speaking to another table of diners about the C.S. Lewis theme I realised- the walls aren't panels- they are wardrobes! The well-loved author of 'The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe' and 'Chronicles of Narnia' was born in the East Belfast area. I really love the fact Pizza Express has taken note of the local heritage & whilst this isn't an out & out 'themed' restaurant, it's just the sort of quirk that goes down well in my book.

I said before the restaurant is spacious, so bringing prams along is not a problem. I always think of Pizza Express as your toddler's 'starter restaurant', as it was certainly the first experience Smix had regularly eating somewhere where he had courses, choices & felt welcome.

Spacious and bright- lots of pram parking space

There is a dedicated children's menu of three courses for £6.95, but that's not just what makes Pizza Express so popular with families. It's genuinely a kid-friendly place, where you aren't going to get glares if your child is a bit over excited. The kids' menu doubles up as a fun activity sheet, complete with stickers, social media competitions, puzzles & white space for drawing.

image.jpg
image.jpg

This is the child meal starter. Dough balls, garlic butter & crunchy veg. Pizza Express Lisburn Road was where Smix started his dough ball addiction, and he gives the Ballyhackamore versions a thumbs up.

image.jpg

Adults can begin with dough balls too, or bruschetta, calamari rings, and the usual Italian treats including antipasto sharing platters.

Because we were trying something new, I tried the 'Prosciutto e Melone' from the summer menu.

This was REALLY GOOD. So fresh but with the prosciutto supplying your first taste of the authentic Italian ingredients & flavours. Also worth noting you get a serious amount of meat, they aren't doing it by halves, even though it is a starter.

Moving on to main courses. There are salads (the Niçoise is my usual go to main course in fact), pastas, calzone and three types of pizza. You can choose a regular classic pizza, a romana, or a leggera.

With the romana they take the dough and toss it for longer to make the pizza larger & thinner, so it bakes crispier.

The leggera is the calorie counter's dream- a pizza all to yourself and it's UNDER 600 CALORIES.

When I get pizza rather than the salad & dough sticks, I pick the leggera option. This is because there are benefits above that of just being a less calorific meal. I like to partake in the three course experience, and if I try to eat a starter, a full size main course pizza & a dessert & coffee- I'm almost fit to burst. So I prefer to get a starter, the leggera, and a dessert than to blow my entire stomach space on just my main course (tactical eating!). It means I'm still eating a lot of calories, but it means I can actually experience the different dishes along the way.

The other reason besides any notion of dieting, is the fact the centre of the pizza is salad. I always take salad with my pizza if I can, so rather than having to order a side salad, these come already loaded with one. Handy!

Smix always and forever chooses the pepperoni main course pizza, which is a good size for him. The kids' menu also has a selection of pastas, and you can add whatever pizza toppings you wish to the couple of varieties on the menu. Smix used to love olives when he was little, so we would add those to his pizza. It gives kids a chance to experiment and try ingredients they might not have a chance to elsewhere. He's also a total Parmesan fiend, and Pizza Express give you it free and fresh.

image.jpg

Next, chips, but not just any ordinary chips. And this will expose my lack of food blogging credentials, if there were any notions I was a foodie in the first place.

They are 'polenta chips' baked with Gean Milano cheese. Now to me they looked like, and pretty much tasted like 'fancy chips'. But I was chatting to the waitress about them, because they are new to the menu & I hadn't tried them before & she explained they are made from wheat- and not a potato in sight!

image.jpg

It's hard to even describe what they are like, so I will cop out and simply say that if you visit Pizza Express soon, get a side of them to share and tweet me (@rudedoodle) what you make of them! They were good, but my little N.Irish head found the prospect of non-potato chips hard to get around!

Finally, dessert. Smix wanted a full sized dessert, so I will just mention that included in the kids' meal you do get a choice of desserts, pictured below.

image.jpg

However Smix's favourite is chocolate fudge cake, and he says this was a good one.

image.jpg

I usually go for a dolcetti dessert, and again it's a clever little Pizza Express menu option for people like me who can't eat massive meals but simply have to have 'afters'!

They are mini-desserts that come with your choice of tea or coffee, and again there is a low calorie option under 100 cals if you are watching your weight.

image.jpg

However today I thought I would try the Eton Mess cheesecake from the summer menu, as I hadn't tried it before.  Another top tip- always get the mascarpone rather than ice cream or cream when you are in a Pizza Express- you'll thank me.

image.jpg

I actually was disappointed with this one course, and it was the taste. There is just way too much going on in that small dish. You've the pavlova type concoction of the Eton Mess, but then it's laid on a layer of dulce de leche, then a cheesecake base. It tastes like about three desserts at once, and too sweet for me. I think I would go back to the chocolate brownie or the cake Smix got. Sorry Pizza Express!

image.jpg

So, fancy trying out the new Ballyhackamore branch yourself? Or the St. Anne's venue? Well until the 16th September you can get 30% off your food in ANY of the Belfast restaurants. That's Mon-Thurs or after 5pm on Sunday.

Not based in NI? Well the Pizza Express website has an offer for everyone to get 40% off food in all restaurants this Sunday- visit the link for details and more offers.

Thank you to the Ballyhackamore team for making us so welcome this afternoon. Meal provided for reviewing purposes.

Tip Top of the Kid-friendly Restaurant Chains, Pizza Express Is a Firm Family Favourite

Pizza Express is a firm favourite of our's to visit on the weekend. When our family comprised of three we would often be found chowing down of a Saturday afternoon in their Lisburn Road branch restaurant.

Bedford St refurb

Bedford St refurb

Since November 2014 it's just been myself & Smix, and we find ourselves more often in Yo Sushi! these days, but  Pizza Express Bedford Street invited us both along to investigate their swanky refurb, and try out their seasonal menu, and we weren't about to turn down an offer like that!

Quiet when we arrived at 445pm- bustling by the time we left

- bustling by the time we left

The city centre located branch now seats 185 and can be used for groups and parties. I tend to think of this restaurant as less full-on family packed than the Lisburn Road one, but you'll still find the full kids' menu, high chairs available and of course fun colouring in menu and stickers for every mini guest. Smix was particularly impressed that they supply Crayola twisty crayons- apparently they are big news in school right now, and very much vital to my report to you guys!

Smix always gets the same thing each visit. Dough Balls to start, with butter dip and veg. Pepperoni pizza as a main course, with tonnes of parmesan cheese on top. Chocolate brownie for dessert with bambinoccino (looks like an espresso, really is frothed milk, a very cool novelty to sip just like mum or dad).

image.jpg

The three courses are £6.45 altogether, but note this doesn't include a drink, but like most places tap water is free anyway. There are also pasta dishes if your children aren't in the mood for pizza.

Its also worth bookmarking  Pizza Express's offers page and checking once in a while to see if there is an offer that suits your party size.

Another handy hint is to  have a nosy at the Pizza Express online menu. If you haven't eaten at one of their restaurants before, then unlike the physical menu you get there, the online version has photos of each dish, so you've a better idea of what you are ordering. Great if you're really fussy about meals, and even better for family's with food allergy considerations, as every item is explained.

Pizza Express make traditional, Italian style pizzas. They are fresh, light & topped to perfection. I love this style of pizza, and I now can't remember the last time I even ate D*m*nos Pizza. Their heavy, doughy, thick based pizzas are hard on my stomach. Not to mention a waste as I can only eat two slices max.

But back to the pizzas in question, or more specifically my starter.

image.jpg

I had my eye on the Mac & Cheese, but then I noticed the calamari starter is back, so I had to get that. I had it years ago, but it went off the menu for a while. I'm glad it's back. The calamari is great quality, no chewy, elastic squid here. The batter is light and crunchy with no heavy greasiness. The Pizza Express House Sauce compliments this starter beautifully. If you haven't experienced Pizza Express's house sauce, then ask for a little pot even for dipping your pizza crusts. It's so tasty, and you can buy bottles of it from Tesco etc to give salads at home a bit of a kick.

image.jpg
image.jpg

If you want the full Pizza Express Experience however, then make sure at least one person in your party gets a starter of their famous dough balls. Again you can buy these in supermarkets to bake at home, but nothing beats the real thing.

image.jpg

On to the main course. As well as their delicious thin based pizzas, there are calzone, salad and pasta options.

image.jpg

My usual main course choice was the Nicoise salad. Egg, anchovies, tuna, lots of fresh salad greens and tomatoes.

image.jpg

However with us being invited along to try something new, I thought it would be more apt to order a pizza.

I chose the pollo leggera pizza. Leggera pizzas are a little bit of genius. It's a regular sized pizza, but they remove the centre and instead load it with lots of fresh salad. This means nutritionally each Leggera pizza comes in at under 525 calories. This makes Pizza Express even more family friendly- not only do you have kids' options, but you have just-as-delicious main course options for those dieting. It means even if you are on a diet, Pizza Express is somewhere you can chose to eat out at, without sabotaging your calorie counting.

image.jpg

Personally I'm not dieting as such at the moment, but Leggera pizzas fulfil a different angle for me.

You see I just can't eat three courses of food in one go. I want a starter because otherwise I would be sitting wanting to steal Smix's dough balls, and I want a dessert, but if I've eaten an entire pizza then I won't have room.

With the Leggera option I can have a starter, the Leggera, and a dessert without feeling so full that I want to crawl under the table and nap afterwards.

It also means I have a built in salad with my main, so I don't have to order a green salad as a side.

image.jpg

In the spirit of trying something new, I did however order their house coleslaw, a crunchy creamy delight with red cabbage and horseradish, which makes a perfect partner for the thin based pizza.

image.jpg
image.jpg

Smix was happy with his pepperoni main course pizza too. Gooey, yummy, stringy mozzarella with his own addition of Parmesan sprinkled on top.

image.jpg

On to dessert! I liked the look of the  bombolini, but in the end I went for the seasonal treacle tart.

image.jpg

When I do get a dessert at Pizza Express I always pick the mascarpone with it rather than fresh cream or icecream. It's a little Italian twist, and would be delicious with the classic British treacle tart. Sadly the restaurant didn't have any for my dessert last night, but it was lovely with fresh cream all the same.

image.jpg
image.jpg

Smix chose the chocolate brownie, which comes with a steamed milk drink to match mum and dad's coffee.

image.jpg

Another stroke of genius from Pizza Express is their selection of mini desserts with companion coffee. If you don't have room for a large dessert but you still want something sweet, you can pick one of them. And why not give your coffee a little Irish kick with a splash of Baileys or whisky?

image.jpg

So thank you for having us, Pizza Express. A great Mother's Day lunch plan for this weekend, and a menu with something for everyone.

M&S Pizzas- A Second Chance & New Flavours to Try

Pizzas £4 each : Salads two for £4

Pizzas £4 each : Salads two for £4

I love M&S food, and 99% of the time I'm happy to pay the slightly more than other supermarket prices for their products, because the quality is always there. But, I have a secret. I hate M&S pizzas.

I tried them a few years ago and just didn't like them. I didn't like the base, the toppings, the way they cooked- nothing. So when my lovely PR contact at M&S asked me to pick up the new stone baked varieties from Sprucefield to try, I wasn't as enthusiastic as I usually am about my trip to Lisburn.

image.jpg

I picked the classics, and the new combinations, all of which cost £4. The new pizza recipes are BBQ Pulled Pork, The Magnificent Meaty and The New Yorker. The latter appealed to me the most with pastrami, gherkins and what looks like American mustard toppings.

image.jpg

Every pizza is totally loaded with toppings, no half measures. But, did I like the M&S pizzas now? A few years on and I can safely score them off my dislikes list. The bases cook really well, the toppings are lovely and I would definitely buy them again. I think I'd still avoid the boxed pizzas which were the ones I didn't care for previously, but this range is everything you'd expect from M&S. Filling, delicious and very tasty.

image.jpg

That's the pepperoni one below, which my son and I shared this evening with their olive and feta salad. He gives it a big thumbs up too. The New Yorker is the one I'm most curious about, so keep an eye on my Instagram (@rudedoodle) and I'll let you know how it goes when we cook it.

Proper Pizza All Round at Little Wing's New Holywood Restaurant

We Smyths are huge Little Wing fans, so when their newest location opened in Holywood a few weeks back, it was as good an excuse as any to 'wing it'.

image.jpg

Little Wing has restaurants in Bangor, Ballyhackamore, Ann Street in the city and on the Lisburn Road. Bangor is our usual, but Holywood previously being a bank building makes for a large, bright dining experience, and I think we will be locals there instead. The food was fabulous too, no teething problems with being a new restaurant to speak of, everything was beyond delicious.

image.jpg

Starters include olives, garlic bread or dough sticks. As in similar family friendly Pizza places, there's a three course children's menu. They choose between dough sticks or soup for first course, with pizzas or pastas as their main meal. The dessert cone and mini-hot chocolate is all included in the set price.

image.jpg
image.jpg

The pizzas at Little Wing are PROPER Italian pizzas. Thin, crispy, with traditional toppings. I always get frustrated when getting Do******s Pizza due to the complete lack of anchovies or olives on the menu in the Bangor branch. In Little Wing you can have both, you can even have calamari (squid).

Shape and size wise the choices are

1) a regular size pizza

image.jpg

2) Ireland's BIGGEST pizza, 24", by the slice with side salad, or tackle the beast yourself

image.jpg
image.jpg

3) Skinny Pizza. I'm not sure it means it's a healthy option rather than the regular (although thin crispy dough is definitely healthier than big, thick bases other chain stores sell). These cost £2 more as they include more toppings, and are served on a rustic, wooden board. My husband went for the spiciest on the menu, and I got the anchovie pizza with black olives as an extra. Perfect.

image.jpg
image.jpg
image.jpg
image.jpg

4) a Calzone pizza, a folded, tasty wonder.

image.jpg

The skinny pizza truly defeated me, but boxes are on stand-by to bring your left overs home.

image.jpg
image.jpg

Now I may have been full, but my dessert stomach had room, and as our son got an ice cream with his anyway, we both perused the desserts and coffee menu.

image.jpg

I got the Nutella Pizza and my husband got, as he said, 'the best chocolate cake I've tasted'.

image.jpg
image.jpg
image.jpg
image.jpg

We were very happy with all concerned. Setting  friendliness, value for money, all spot on. They are even in the process of setting up a children's play area in the back, and kids get a spot-the-item colouring page on the back of their menu to keep them busy whilst the pizza is cooking.

image.jpg
image.jpg

You can also order pizza to take away. The Holywood restaurant also has a mini Patisserie Mimi, selling macaroons & treats. So you can pop in for a nosy even if you aren't sitting to eat.

Tweet me @rudedoodle if you get a chance to pop along over the long weekend ahead, your family will love Little Wing.
